Newbury Street MUST STOP SHOPS! and travel tips

There’s me, casually walking past the stores that are way out of my price range.

Newbury Street is a stop that must be on everybody’s list when they are visiting Boston. It is absolutely the prime shopping spot in the city. The stores vary in style and price range, and the energy is amazing. It is also just plain beautiful. The store fronts are adorable and there are gorgeous churches and architecture.

I went on a little shopping trip with my sister last weekend, and I’d like to share my Newbury Street necessary stops:

GETTING THERE:
My recommendation is to take public transportation. I RARELY drive all the way into the city. Traffic is always crazy and the old streets and tunnels are really hard to navigate. If you use a GPS you will lose service if you try to go into any of the Boston Tunnels. Typically, I drive from the west and park my car at the Riverside Train Station in Newton, MA. Then I can comfortably meander through the city by taking trains and walking.

On this particular trip, we were driving in from Revere. Since we were already so close, we drove right in. We parked our car at the Boston Public Garden Garage. It was pretty easy to get to and affordable. I think we were parked for about 6 or 7 hours and we paid $18 for parking. From the gardens, Newbury Street is just a short walk away.

MUST SEE:

Newbury Comics– There are Newbury Comics stores sprinkled all over the state, but this one is the original, and ultimate shop. I don’t go there for the comics; this huge store is filled with quirky and dorktastic items. They have walls full of funko pops. Merchandise for all your favorite tv shows, movies, and video games. Super cute clothing and accessories., and so much more. It is sure to be a fun stop no matter what you are into.

Johnny Cupcakes- Johnny Cupcakes is an absolute-must when you are in the area. The store is infamously known for appearing as a bakery, only when you walk inside, you realize it’s a t-shirt company. The inside is wicked cool, adorned with ovens and pastry glass-fronts. They are constantly coming out with new t-shirt designs, and once a design is gone, it’s gone for good. Because of this, every shirt is limited, which means every one is special! It’s especially exciting to visit the store, as they offer some super special Boston designs that are not available on the website.

Walking into Johnny Cupcakes, you are greeted by this wall of ovens!

Trident Booksellers & Cafe- This adorable little shop was unfortunately closed temporarily on my last outing, however it definitely belongs on the MUST STOP SHOPS list. It’s the best of both worlds, a restaurant and bookstore. They have a shelf dedicated to “blind date books”. If you’re a book lover, head over to the shelf with covered books’ and choose whichever description tickles your fancy!

Stop for brunch, lunch, or dinner- Newbury Street has endless options for dining, no matter what time of day. I think it’s fun to purposefully not plan this aspect of the day. I normally love to know exactly where I’ll be and when. But in this circumstance, I find it SO fun to wander into whichever restaurant peaks my attention. This last trip, it was The Met Back Bay. It was a nice day, so we took advantage of the outdoor patio. The drinks and food were simply divine.

Harry Potter Store- I was so excited to see this little store on Newbury. The signage said it all, and I knew I had to go in. Honestly, it was an extremely small store and very, very crowded. I didn’t stay long or buy anything. But, I was there on a Saturday afternoon, 2 days before the Boston Marathon and during school vacation week. So I think if I went back during a less crazy time I could have a lot of fun in there. Despite how crowded it was, it was super cute and quirky inside, definitely worth a visit for any Harry Potter fan.

This way towards Harry Potter merch!

Obviously there are HUNDREDS more stores that absolutely require your attentions. I usually pop into the usuals, Victoria’s Secret, Urban Outfitters, H&M, and so many more. But there are so many other cute boutiques and shops to explore.

Go out, walk around, stroll, and wander up and down the street. Enjoy everything that Newbury Street and Boston has to offer!
